Abstract: This article examines the function of on-site rereading in the Itinéraire de Paris à Jérusalem, distinguishing it from neighboring practices such as citation. This mode of reading involves staging the text in its proper place and thus putting it to the test. However, apart from scripture, only the “modern” works of Tasso (La Gerusalemme liberata) and Racine (Athalie) appear to have retained their meaning and, in the case of Athalie, their prophetic power.
