- Abstract: Between 1919 and 1926, François Mauriac published some sixty theater columns in La Revue hebdomadaire and then La NRF. This article analyses the apprentice-spectator’s perspective on the Parisian stage. Mauriac was saddened by the crisis of the dramatic arts, but at the same time hailed the revival brought about by Jacques Copeau and the Cartel. While he advocated the superiority of the novel, he developed reflections on theater based on the notions of human and moral truth, which he would experiment with in his plays from 1937 onward.
