. Proust au temps du cinématographe : un écrivain face aux médias
  • Author: Carou (Alain)
  • Abstract: In its earliest days, cinema did not uniformly encounter hostility or indifference from people of letters. Before 1912, it would be quite risky to describe a writer as a “cinephile” or “cinephobe.” The perception that the cinema could be a sort of carnival sideshow attracts the sympathy of literary people. Its rise to the status of mass spectacle is what provides it with its first enemies. This article underscores the ambivalence of the notion of “cinematic vision” invoked by Proust.
