• Abstract: Proust reflected on the medial conditions of his œuvre in a way that few other authors have done. Producing a film based on La Recherche must surely push the medium of cinema beyond its limits: this is shown by the Chilean director Raoul Ruiz who took up the challenge. His adaptation poses the question of how World War I is represented in La Recherche –for in Le Temps retrouvé Proust transforms Combray into a second Verdun, thus producing a geographical palimpsest which is transcribed by Ruiz into images.
