Abstract: The experience of war modified the original conception of La Recherche. The protagonists in these processes of metamorphosis, transgression and structural modification are the narrator, the Baron de Charlus and Gilberte – Charlus especially in the key brothel scene which changes Marcel’s novel, and Gilberte in her role of intermediary between the war fronts and the two aspects of society.
