- Abstract: To what literary genre does the sequence “M. de Charlus pendant la guerre” in Le Temps retrouvé belong? The temptation to write Memoirs is both avoided and indulged; Proust and his narrator make themselves chroniclers of the period, giving a journalistic account of the war that the novelist found missing in the press of the time. This hybrid text, despite consolidating the structures of the novel cycle by all sorts of links, foretells the whole future of the novel in the twentieth century.
