Abstract: This study of the writing in the Essais brings together meeting and recognition in their relation to chance and to a kind of truth arising therefrom. A multi-level analytical approach shows that the Essais, having the characteristics of a hapax, give rise to a discursive economy that constructs a universe of precarious links.
