Abstract: This volume brings together three Yiddish narratives evoking the lost world of the shtetl: Stempenyu by Sholem-Aleykhem, which describes the life of an itinerant klezmer violinist and inveterate seducer, and two sketches by Isaac-Meir Weissenberg, infused with an empathy which contrasts with the harsh realism usually associated with him.
