Abstract: Before focusing exclusively on opera, Quinault wrote for theatre and, between 1658 and 1671, composed four tragedies: La Mort de Cyrus, Astrate, Pausanias, and Bellérophon. These plays deserve to be re-examined in relation to the dramatic theory and practice of the 1660s.
