- Abstract: It is well known that ghosts can appear to the senses of the living (hearing, sight, smell, touch) through apparitions which are frightening because they are incredible. It is also well known that even when dead, the “souls” can continue to suffer acute bodily torments. The Middle Ages exploited this paradox in emblematic fashion through its definition of an in-between-world, in which the ins and outs of this problem come together.
