- Abstract: In his Super Iohannem, Albert the Great begins with a noetic problem: since the human intellect is linked to the senses and the imagination, how can it understand the unique principle which depends on what is intelligible? Albert the Great uses a renowned comparison: in the same way as the eye of a nocturnal bird cannot look straight at the sun, the human intellect cannot understand the principle straightaway. This study analyses the multiple meanings of this comparison.
