Abstract: French metrical meta-language underwent significant changes in the sixteenth century. Some of these changes were in the direction of a greater rationalisation of terminology (a reduction in synonyms, polysemantic terms, or terms used in different areas). But they were also noticeable in the emergence of new lexicons, constructed through metaphors drawing on anatomy and astronomy, developing the valorising analogy of the poem and body or poem and universe.
