Abstract: This article studies diverse representations of the book-object in engravings accompanying Renaissance editions of prose vernacular accounts. It shows how the figuration of the book crystallises the complex dynamics associating oral and written, individual reading and collective reading, and the construction of the self and projection for the other. Furthermore, the book ends up becoming, through diverse figurative representations, an accessory of authoriality.
