Parody and Music Iberian Examples

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work:
Parodies courtoises, parodies de la courtoisie
  • Author: Ferreira (Manuel Pedro)
  • Abstract: Contrafaction, allusion and parody are related concepts, yet the extent to which they can be applied in song before 1300 is very different. This paper explores the uses of contrafactum in medieval Iberian song and examines in detail Galician-Portuguese cantigas by Alfonso X of Castile and León, trying to determine the presence of such procedures. Six Cantigas de Santa Maria, the debate of Alfonso with Arnaut, and the former’s satirical song Com’eu en dia de Pascoa will be discussed.
