- Abstract: This article analyses three episodes in the anonymous Guillaume de Palerne that demonstrate use of demarcated spaces to trigger narrative change and signal intertextual transformation. By focusing on the “vergier”, it argues that the depiction of events set in this space highlights manipulation of key intertexts, including the Chanson de Roland and Cligès. In so doing, the paper emphasises the importance of transformation in the narrative and intertextual spheres of the romance.
