- Abstract: This article prevails upon Georges Bataille’s conception of the poetic in order to assess the consequences of the impossibility of giving up on poetry in Une saison en enfer. Taking both (a)theological and epistemological considerations into account, the article shows how the refusal of salvation leads, like the rejection of poetry, not to abandonment but to a transformation. Rimbaud gives up on (his) giving up, and thus plunges into the atopical void of freedom as Bataille understands it.
