Abstract: Valéry Laurand finds elements of a politics of servitude in the work of Philo of Alexandria, taking shape in commentaries on the Old Testament. Philo demonstrates the tendency to enslavement present in human nature itself, and this enslavement to passion affects the public as well as the authorities. In this perspective, all forms of emancipation equate with violence inflicted on a nature which resists, desiring its servitude.
