• Abstract: By comparing Benoît de Sainte-Maure’s Roman de Troie with its later prose versions, this study interrogates the generic contexts which delineate the representation of marvellous motifs. While the verse novel invests in the marvellous in order to enable a self-reflexive exploration of novelistic writing, its prose versions are shaped by a demand for truth and moralising borrowed from the historical model which leads them to reposition the marvellous in the order of divine causality.
