Abstract: Apart from the famous trip to Italy, by way of Germany and Switzerland, we know of no other confirmed journey abroad undertaken by Montaigne. Although his Italian journal is the only evidence of his first-hand experience of foreign lands, it corroborates, nevertheless, many virtual journeys found in the Essais.
