- Abstract: Renaissance treatises of poetics and rhetoric cannot avoid using concrete examples to define and illustrate what a metaphor is. It so happens that the status of these examples and their critical analysis reveal something of wider aesthetic and poetic issues, affecting the norms of good speaking as well as the rights conceded to the singular genius of poets.
