- Abstract: The notion of the psychological novel, as analysed by Albert Thibaudet in his article on the Bal du Comte d’Orgel, allows us to draw a distinction between the romance (founded on stereotype) and the sentimental novel which, based on the invented and the unexpected, belongs more fully to the literary domain. By playing with what constitutes the very essence of the novelistic, and by adopting an ironic approach, Radiguet confers a new legitimacy on the sentimental novel.
