- Abstract: Following a brief examination of the current state of scientific debates about love, as demonstrated in some recent publications, this article situates Balzac’s novel, Le Lys dans la vallée, in the context of its initial publication. Beyond the novelistic elements and the plot, Balzac’s text offers a theory a romantic love. Extracts from its discourse on love are used to prove this thesis. According to Balzac, love is the most beautiful human religion.
