- Abstract: As it gives no descriptive elements regarding the Beast, Leprince de Beaumont’s Beauty and the Beast allows for all sorts of interpretations. One could draw up a catalogue of representations of the Beast and their symbolic meanings : violence, brutality, strength etc. The way continuity or rupture is established between the Beast’s appearance and that which the Prince really is, gives an orientation to the meaning of each of these illustrations and beyond, to the meaning of the tale itself.
