Abstract: This analysis of political groupings, their role, and their internal dynamics, by way of Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes, philosophers who were able to influence thinking about dissidence in France, traces the cross-referencing and points of contact which exist between their criticism of political factions and the thought of an individual who sought to put his knowledge of factions into practice during the Fronde: the cardinal de Retz.
