Abstract: Religious language is spread throughout the text of La Soirée des proverbes, but its meaning is not immediately discernible. To the reader attentive to signs and ready for the adventure of interpretation, the death of Argengeorge cannot be reduced to a suicide motivated by the bitterness of existence, but resonates with the Biblical symbolism of the crucifixion and resurrection. Schehadé’s poetry works to prevent a banally hopeless interpretation and avoids imposing a Christian meaning.
