Abstract: Despite getting on very well together, Schehadé’s collaboration with Barrault was not as profitable for him as for Paul Claudel. If the historical context can explain the failure of the plays, the equilibrium of poetic realism was also difficult to maintain on stage. The study of the stage manuscripts testifies, however, to the input of the head of the troop in the genesis of the texts: by asking the playwright to make the set essential for the construction of his universe, Barrault allowed Schehadé’s poetry to be a poetry of theatre.
