• Abstract: Constructed around the somatization of the pain of being displaced, al-Muḥaymid’s Fiḫāḫ al-rā’iḥa is an intertwining tale about the displacement of three men who have been mutilated by life and its challenges: the male body, amputated and torn from its native environment, is omnipresent here. The bodies of displaced male characters retain an indelible mark left by a displacement that is experienced as an uprooting that cannot be undone or treated. And the challenge of being torn away from one’s place of origin is inscribed on a male body that has become “palimpsestic.”
