• Abstract: Tawfīq al-­Ḥakīm’s œuvre abounds with a variety of portraits of women, ranging from positive and idealised images to ultra-negative and stereotyped representations. This ambiguity provides us with the opportunity to debate the validity of the ‘aduww al-­mar’a (“enemy of the ­woman”) stereotype that Tawfīq al-Ḥakīm claims for himself. The study of these portraits helps us determine whether the variability of the feminine image in this œuvre is an authorial posture or genuine misogyny.
