Abstract: As a system of representation governed by a specific logic, the nobiliary imaginary has had a considerable, but still relatively poorly appreciated, impact on twentieth-century French literature. This article, and the volume of which it offers a synthesis, aims to grasp the principal threads of this historically determined imaginary.
