Abstract: Not content with creating a veritable sociology within a novelistic monument in which this dominant caste contested by the rising bourgeoisie has a key place, Honoré de Balzac makes use of the nobility to shape his identity as a writer. These different dimensions fashion an imaginary which assumes a two-fold poetic interrogation pertaining to the function and motivation of the Balzacian nobiliary imaginary.
