• Abstract: By way of the correspondence between the Sardinian consul and the Minister for Foreign Affairs at the time of Italian unification, this contribution examines the mechanics of the consular process and in particular the interaction between ever-stronger state orders and the particular interests pursued by individual consuls. Gathering information supplied consuls with a mission–in this case that of surveying developments in the Orient question–but also allowed them to showcase qualities like sociability and loyalty.
