• Abstract: The Dictionnaire ­culturel de ­l’Orientalisme offers a ­complex and dynamic vision of the large region named the Orient (the East). Within this region, we limit our analysis to elements relative to three Mediterranean countries: Greece, Turkey, Egypt. Toward this end, we examine and ­compare the “testimonial documents” of two writers (Théophile Gautier and Edmond About) who visited the same places but, strikingly, whose visions and perceptions are diametrically opposite. The results reflect a significant dialectic elicited by this domain of reflexion.
