Abstract: This study traces the representation of mourning families in two tales by François Bon: C’était toute une vie and L’Enterrement. The family, staring into the abyss, seems almost impossible to represent; it is by way of an intermedial relationship between text, painting, sculpture, and photography that it can be shown. The effects of mourning are not, however, limited to catalysing the collapse of the family: its fragmentation renders it better prepared to adapt to the demands of contemporary society.
