• Abstract: The article aims at proposing a few observations on this issue very topic : the representation of male characters by women authors. It starts with historical considerations on a “genre”, the novel, traditionally linked to women ; it then considers theoretical questions on the “character” ; it ends with comments on two differences between men and women revealed by the literary practice where the gender difference is at stake.
