Abstract: Poison is a commonplace of Western literature. Poisons, criminal inventions and their effects are variable, as well as motives. Recurring schemas do, however, appear within this diversity, which allow us to compare Romantic tales with modern texts which are themselves marked by Romantic influences. These texts testify to the fascination with which literary youths view death by poison, in general in the context of impossible or failed love.
