  • Abstract: The French Revolution is a period of instability that the historical detective story, an increasingly represented and established sub-genre, likes to explore. At the crossroads of entertainment and scholarship, this popular genre thus appears to be an efficient tool for evaluating the widespread representations of certain historical events. By analyzing a few French and English examples, we will see how stereotypes linked with the violence of revolutions are exploited; these stereotypes are in some way a legacy from the Romantic representations of the Revolution.
