- Abstract: We tend to consider Villiers as a symbolist writer, but he saw history as a reservoir of themes and motifs which could evoke and interpret the present. This is the case in “Impatience de la foule” and “La Reine Ysabeau” (Contes cruels), for example, or “La Torture par l’espérance” and the “Chant du Coq” (Nouveaux contes cruels). This article analyses Spanish translations of the short stories by Villiers with a historical basis, and focuses in particular on Manuel Reina’s adaptation of “Impatience de foule”.
