• Abstract: This article examines the metaphysics of the Esprit de Spinoza or Traité des trois imposteurs, especially with regard to the idea of atheism set out in the text. It shows that the influence of Spinozism in its different versions leaves room for the ontology of Holbach, which is better understood as a path towards atheism than as an atheistic stance as such.
