Abstract: The physician, engineer, and geographer of the king, Pierre Petit (1598-1677), not only addressed underlying materialist and atheist (manuscript) objections to Cartesian thought, as the author has previously shown: at 22, Petit was briefly a student and denunciator of the Judaizing Jean Fontanier, executed in Paris in December 1621. In passing, the author confirms Petit’s birthday as 31 December 1598 on the basis of his baptismal certificate.
