Abstract: The “Naudé” part of the Vienna manuscript, corresponding to the first 80 pages, can be distinguished from the rest by the importance lent to the question of inner conviction (as opposed to confessional identity). This section appears to be haunted by the firm intention to lift the veil on innermost convictions and what is reveals is nothing other than the extreme vulnerability of the act of faith. An analysis which weighed more and more heavily since the days of Montaigne and Charron.
