- Abstract: A free thinker in so far as he defends freedom from the “yoke” of established religion, Challe defines his deism as a “pure deism”, neither disguised atheism nor a half-way step between Christianity and atheism. Not only does he recognise the existence of a Creator, but he actively urges a constructive deism, elaborated under the light of reason. Hostile both to atheism and to the Christian faith, Challe develops a “system of natural religion” which bears all the traits of a reformed Christianity.
