- Abstract: The Lazarillo de Tormes is conceived as the transcription of a letter that a supposed Lazaro sent to his protector. It founds a new, specifically Spanish, narrative genre : the picaresque. This article interrogates the status of this letter, showing us that by taking it seriously we forget its burlesque dimensions, which inserts it in the tradition of the paradoxical eulogy, as with Erasmus The Praise of Foly or Menippean and Lucianesque satire.
