- Abstract: With Au-dessus de la mêlée, Romain Rolland rapidly became a figure of defeatism, the icon on which the legend of his pacifism was constructed. In reality, and in a more nuanced manner, we see affirmed the collapse of a civilisation which, in a cyclical process, nonetheless affirms the rights of the spirit and the apostolic work of universal union.
