• Abstract: If the war (with Prélude à Verdun and Verdun) is the pivot of the Hommes de bonne volonté, whose action takes place between 1908 and 1933, its ­consequences are not forgotten between volume XVII and XXVII. By studying them (by way of the teacher Clanricard, the general Duroure, the former soldier Vidal, the financier Haverkamp, and the normalien and politician Jerphanion), we appreciate its “shadow ­cast” on a generation marked for life.
