Abstract: The Christian Middle-Ages appropriated pre-existing ‘paremies’ (proverbs, maxims, expressions) in such a way as to render them indispensable for moral and religious instructors, stimulating for artists, attractive to orators, and thus important for medieval culture as a whole.
