Abstract: In medieval Latin, the term compassio designates a contagion, in the sense of an involuntary psychic or corporeal reaction which reflects the behaviour of another as if by imitation. The enigma of compassio constitutes the central focus in an enquiry into the university sources of the Middle Ages.
