• Abstract: The canons of the 18th century, whilst seeking to develop the place of music in ceremonies but without increasing their overall costs, ­considered the wage as the solution which allowed them to associate quality of recruitment and moderation of remuneration offered. However, their plans faced resistance from the priest being granted a benefice of lower choir. The latters were often required to accept heavier loads when the ­canon’s reform plans failed.
