• Abstract: The arrival of French culture in Tonkin (Indochina) from 1884 onwards was facilitated by diverse popular forms ranging from songs to military concerts. While the colonial government took the cultural programme in hand by imposing a programme of operettas and entertainment, thanks to amateur theatre, classical French culture was well received by the native population and the French public.
