- Abstract: Two rival practices influence the interpretation of the “modern” printed book : solitary reading and public reading. In the first case, readers can easily fall into delirious interpretations ; in the second, they inevitably enter into a debate (disputa). This paper argues that Cervantes designed the “exemplary story” (novela ejemplar) as a way to counter the interpretative risks implied by those two modes of reading.
