Abstract: The remarkable success of epithet and rhyme dictionaries in Europe in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries makes them witnesses of an era, a state of language, and an age of poetry. The literary approach proposed here seeks to illuminate the rhetorical and linguistic implications.
